If you're wondering what it's like to ascend Table Mountain, it's like climbing a stairway for giants. It takes a really long time, and your calves may start to feel numb somewhere near the end. When I finally reached the top, my much more athletic, much faster friend told me that the cable car (to spare us the climb back down) was broken. I told her that her joke was very funny. It wasn't a joke.

It wasn't all bad. We had more time on the mountain while they fixed the cable car (they did fix it, eventually). I found some dassies (rock hyraxes) and this red-winged starling. We saw the sun set, then descended under a blanket of stars. South Africa, man. It's pretty amazing. You should go if you get the chance.
